Bullying Addendum: Any student reported to be bullying another student should be reported to guidance or administration. If subsequent investigation supports the bullying allegations, the following intervention will be implemented.
 
Bullying Intervention Project
 
            Working in conjunction, the guidance office and administrative team at North Augusta High School will assess bullying claims on an individual basis and determine students who may benefit from a bullying intervention. Depending on the extent of the bullying, a student will receive appropriate disciplinary action in conjunction with the requirement of completing the bullying intervention program. In most cases, out-of- school suspension will be assigned along with the requirement of a completed intervention packet and a re-admittance meeting between guidance, the assigned administrator, the student, and the parent or guardian. The purpose of the bullying program is to identify potential bullying issues and be proactive as well as reactive.  
 
Stopbullying.org writes the following:
Bullying is a widespread and serious problem that can happen anywhere.  It is not a phase children have to go through, it is not "just messing around", and it is not something to grow out of.  Bullying can cause serious and lasting harm.
Although definitions of bullying vary, most agree that bullying involves:
  • Imbalance of Power: people who bully use their power to control or harm and the people being bullied may have a hard time defending themselves
  • Intent to Cause Harm: actions done by accident are not bullying; the person bullying has a goal to cause harm
  • Repetition: incidents of bullying happen to the same the person over and over by the same person or group
Bullying can take many forms. Examples include:
  • Verbal: name-calling, teasing
  • Social: spreading rumors, leaving people out on purpose, breaking up friendships 
  • Physical: hitting, punching, shoving
  • Cyberbullying: using the Internet, mobile phones or other digital technologies to harm others
An act of bullying may fit into more than one of these groups.
 
 
The bullying intervention project will be assigned in order to help students learn how to define bullying and channel bullying behaviors into positive actions. If it is determined that a student is engaged in bullying, the student should complete the following in order to return to school:
1.      A one-page written reflection on what actions they have taken that others see as bullying. This reflection should specify actions and/ or verbal comments the student has made as well as how these actions and comments can make others feel.
2.      The student should access a minimum of three anti-bullying videos at http://www.pacer.org/bullying/video/all-videos.asp. Watch the videos and write a one paragraph synopsis of each video detailing what the student learned.
3.      The student’s parent should schedule an appointment with the student’s administrator for re-entry to school. Administrators can be reached at 803-442-6100.
4.      Sign below indicating that the bullying intervention was completed and a conference was held for re-admittance to school.
